This year has brought significant shifts to the early childhood landscape. Through the statewide implementation of Universal Pre Kindergarten (UPK), California is reshaping the pathways for families by expanding access for three and four year olds to quality early care and education (ECE). Amid these changes, Connections for Children continues to emphasize a parent-choice model, helping families to determine the learning path that best supports their children.
As the field evolves, CFC continues to be a beacon of stability for early educators and families, sharing vital information and guiding families and child care providers as they navigate new systems. With UPK programming expanding across the state, our work remains centered on the individual needs of families while uplifting the educators who build strong foundations for children. CFC's community-wide support system is designed to strengthen families and the early care and education community throughout this transition.
Empowering Parents Through Choice
With the large-scale implementation of a statewide program, the role of trusted family resource agencies that inform parents about their options and support them in choosing the “right fit” for their child is more important than ever. Through CFC’s UPK Information Sessions, parents learn about the array of options available to them, tips for identifying quality programming, and the benefits their child can experience with access to quality early care and education. Over the past year alone, we are proud to have connected more than 500 families to UPK resources.
Equipping Early Care & Education Professionals for Success
Across California, early educators are facing one of the most significant shifts the field has experienced in decades. Providers are adjusting to new program structures, evolving expectations, and the growing demand for high quality environments that support the whole child. In moments of statewide change, consistent guidance and access to reliable information become essential.
CFC’s UPK Information Sessions offer educators the support they need to stay informed and prepared. Providers gain access to high quality resources, professional networks, and practical strategies that strengthen daily learning environments for young children. These sessions also open space for educators to share their firsthand experiences, offering insight into the realities of the UPK transition and the needs emerging across the early care and education community.
Developing Sustainable Partnerships to Advance Access to Quality Early Care
As the early education landscape evolves, strong partnerships among community organizations, school districts, and families are essential. Meaningful coordination across these systems ensures that children experience continuity, stability, and support throughout their early learning journey.
CFC is helping build these connections with intention. Families are welcomed at our Family Time Early Learning and Play Groups, where early learning and community building work hand in hand. District staff deepen their skills through CFC professional development trainings, strengthening the local workforce. Through Inter District Collaboration Cafes, CFC brings together district leaders, administrators, and child care providers to exchange insights and develop partnerships that support after school care, meals, transportation, and other essential services for families.
