PBS SoCal Family Math: Learning Through Everyday Moments

PBS SoCal Family Math: Learning Through Everyday Moments

What would you tell another parent who is thinking about attending a Family Math workshop? One Connections for Children parent’s answer was simple: “No lo piense, ¡hágalo!” — “Don’t think about it, just do it!”

For Joselynn L., PBS SoCal Family Math has become more than a place to learn about early math. She shared how grateful she is to have found a space filled with kindness, love, and encouragement for both herself and her son. She went on to express that the workshops have been a meaningful reminder to them both that there are still genuine, good people in the world who are caring, loving, and supportive. For her, that sense of connection is just as valuable as what they learn together.

The PBS SoCal Family Math Workshop Series supports parents and caregivers of children ages 2–5 with simple, hands-on ways to bring math into everyday life and play. Last year, Connections for Children launched and held five PBS SoCal Family Math workshops @ The Cayton Children’s Museum, with one session bringing together 24 adults and 19 children. Through songs, books, play, and interactive activities, families explore early math concepts in ways that are fun, age-appropriate, and easy to continue at home.

For this parent, the impact is already showing up in their daily routines. She shared that her son enjoys singing the songs from the workshops, reading the books they receive, and practicing counting as they read together. She also appreciates that the workshops provide valuable resources and create a welcoming space where parents can ask questions and connect with additional support.

Give Family Math a try and discover new ways to learn and grow together!
