California has expanded access to early care and education in recent years, and there are now more options available than many families know about. More options is a good thing, and it can make navigating all the options overwhelming.
At Connections for Children, helping families find the right child care is what we do. We are here to support families as they explore the many prekindergarten programs available, understand their options, and know where to turn when they have questions.
What is Universal PreKindergarten (UPK)?
Universal PreKindergarten (UPK) is California's way of providing early care and education choices for 3-and 4-year-old children. Attending an early care and education program prepares children to succeed in school and gives them an opportunity to meet new friends.
UPK programs Available:
Child care centers: Licensed programs in a school-like setting
Family child care homes: Licensed programs in a home setting
Transitional kindergarten (TK): A program for 4-year-olds offered at most elementary schools
