Child care providers are the heart of our communities, yet many continue to face significant challenges to make ends meet.

This month, Connections for Children was featured on Spectrum News 1, highlighting the urgent need to invest in the early care workforce and build a stronger future for families—and for the economy. The feature examined how rising costs and low wages are placing increasing pressure on child care providers, threatening the stability of early care and education programs that countless families rely on.

The segment turned a spotlight on Zekaia Smith, dedicated provider and founder of Smith Family Daycare in Santa Monica, whose knowledge, experience, and commitment to children and families reflects the resilience, care, and determination of this essential workforce.

"It’s my calling, it’s my profession, and I love the kids. I love to see them thriving,” said Zekaia. “[Child care providers] are essential. We set a secure and safe foundation for these kids. We set their future. We need more money and resources so that we can continue to maintain our business financially and emotionally.”
