Adults regard music as one of the performing arts. Young children do not! For them, making music is much more akin to playing a game. This presentation introduces SONG GAME, a research-based, classroom tested activity for teachers working with children 2-5 years old. SONG GAME focuses on the natural, rhythmic responses that young children experience when interacting with language patterns that occur specifically in songs. Special emphasis is given to 1) how rhythm instruments, such as drums and maracas, can help boost early linguistic, cognitive and perceptual development; and 2) how teachers with no music background can utilize current skills in the role of Music Leader to offer fun, language rich, music-making activities.
